What is a Psychic?

A Psychic is defined as an entity that is capable of utilising talents and abilities of a Mental or Emotional nature that can affect one or more individuals including themselves. Examples include, but are not limited to;

  1. Being able to get a “gut feeling” that something is about to happen.
  2. Read someone’s mind to some degree.
  3. Being able to detect something’s association with something that has happened (Such as being able to obtain a hazy idea of what happened with a blood-stained knife).[1]
  4. Eavesdrop on Psychic communication between individuals.[2]
  5. Render themselves and nearby individuals more difficult to detect Psychically.

Arachnids possess Psychics in the form of their Brain Bug caste and similarly “High ranked” bugs. They utilise this prowess to control and dictate the flow of the swarm. As of yet, no-one has managed to successfully tap into anything except the basic emotions of an Arachnid.

Skinnies are another race that possess Psychics, though the extent of how and where Psychics fall within Skinny society is incredibly difficult to pin down. However, when the Federation has encountered Psychic Skinnies they have almost always been Chieftains.

How are Psychics found?

During the early years of a child existing, the infant can be subjected to genetic and behavioural testing. Publically, this is under the guise of trying to make sure that the individual is offered the correct support that they may need in life as well as supplying that assistance to their parents. Unofficially, it is done to check for children who exhibit signs of being Psychic. To help ensure the information is correct the testing is re-done every year with a mandatory attendance every fourth year. This continues until either the Federation is sure of whether the child is Psychic or not.

The process isn’t perfect as some individuals can slip through due to administrative errors, faulty equipment, medical staff making errors or in some cases it can be due to deception. If the individual is later found to be Psychic when they enlist, or are found out to be Psychic by the Federation then they are retroactively given the education they need to understand and correctly use their abilities.

StarShipTroopersHeader-1160x610.png

What is the Federation’s view on Psychics?

The Federation firmly believes that, even with all of the problems that come with handling them, Psychics are beneficial in at least some capacity. Maybe that person can help track down and find a criminal or terrorist hiding within a Federation world? Perhaps they can provide “Camouflage” for small groups of Infantry as they traverse a Separatist world? The tactical, legal, and research applications for Psychics are immeasurable.

However, the Federation also recognizes that Psychics are a limited commodity that cannot be replaced with ease nor replicated as of yet. Thus, they are the only group of people that the Federation will willingly go out and recruit in stark contrast to how the rest of the Mobile Infantry, Fleet and Military Intelligence obtain their fresh new faces.

The Psychic population is also heavily restricted in what they can and cannot do, lest they run rogue and cause immense problems for all aspects of Federal life. Such restrictions include the inability for any Psychic to hold an elected position of Public Office nor can they take any role within a Governmental body that gives them legislative or executive authority within the Federation. This restriction mainly exists due to an incredibly negative backlash to the reveal that Psychic people existed and was established to assure the population that they will not take control of their lives.

Another restriction is that Psychics are banned from gambling as well as directly investing in the Stock Market on any system. If an individual with Psychic capabilities wants to purchase any stock it must be through an Investment firm.

What is the Public Perception of Psychics?

Generally speaking, people treat Psychics with a mix of resentment and distrust as information about Psychics is scarce be it due to the Federation being tight-lipped on the entire situation or just a case of information genuinely not existing. Because of this, people often choose to believe Psychics aren’t actually real, or if they are that they will never meet one, thus when the individual does meet a Psychic by way of having to look at their identification card for any purpose the Civilian or Citizen in question would start acting severely different than before. They may become quite reserved or abrasive, possibly even immediately move away from the Psychic in question.

In terms of Mobile Infantry personnel, they could find Psychics unsettling or outright untrustworthy due to the potential that the individual is reading their mind, or maybe receives preferential treatment in their eyes because of being special. Indeed, they may even be jealous that they themselves do not have any special talents of the Psychic variety.

So you think you’re Psychic? Maybe you are...

This section is dedicated to those who were given Psychic status before the inception and creation of this document. It serves as a guide for how your character might react and what they may experience as a direct result of being “Discovered” whilst they were in Service.

You may first experience disorientation, confusion, headaches (Even to the degree of being migraines) as your mind adapts to the potential now manifesting within you. This is normal and not something you should be too distraught over.

You may also notice that things begin to feel off, that you may become more hesitant to perform actions that are dangerous because you just can’t shake the feeling that something is going to happen. You may also begin to have a vivid recurring dream of past events or you could keep remembering this one place very well and you can’t stop thinking about it. You may even find that you get the feeling that there’s someone nearby, sometimes more than just a someone.

As you try to adjust to these sensations you may note that people begin to act “odd”, that they start treating you differently. This is normal.

If you begin experiencing these sensations, you may notice that certain individuals start appearing more frequently out of the corner of your eye. You may even experience nightmares where you wake up inside an unfamiliar place. This is normal.

Introduction

Psychics are precision instruments in an army. Certain disciplines, in particular, can make a trained psychic enormously useful in the field or at headquarters, and these psychics can expect to be employed for very specific purposes. They have a host of specific talents, or curses, which can be employed to give the Mobile Infantry a tactical edge. There are often two considered gifts or curses to this, the precognitive aspects, and the telepathic aspects.

Precognition in the battlefield can provide their associated squad with warning against ambushes and booby-traps. It’s a deep frustration to most armies that such powers revolve around events that have a personal impact on them. Because of this, it’s often necessary to put a psychic on the front lines of combat in order to give them the necessary environment for making predictions about a battle or a war. That comes with huge risk. Novice psychics can serve as point men for squads on important missions. Their ability to give the indication to the to the outcome of simple events that can spell the difference between success and failure for a mission. Many squads can view them as a kind of walking good-luck charm.

The other side is the aspect that most squads hate them for. . .

Telepaths are interrogators par excellence. Novice telepaths serve in the field as translators and as spotters of problematic locals. A telepath can give a squad’s negotiator a substantial advantage for reading a target’s emotional reactions to various questions, even if they can’t catch more than the most basic surface impressions. If you want to detect a control bug or separatist spy, then these troopers are often ideal assets. This has, however, given the Mobile Infantry a bad scare-mongering reputation of "Psychic Operatives" always knowing what you are thinking.

Lastly, psychic powers are always invisible.

Pay, Ranks, and Treatment

Psychics on board the Grant are not paid an enormous amount compared to ordinary troopers. Their signing, however, is normally enforced with conscription without retirement, often until their own powers burn them out, or they are exhausted of use from service.

You can’t even have a friendly game of cards without the prick calling your hand. The more familiar the soldiers are with psychics the less likely this is to be a problem, but some tensions are inevitable. Because of their value psychics can get away with a lot of things that would see an ordinary soldier jailed, discharged, or occasionally shot. Psychics might suffer petty discipline, punishment duty, and regular screaming rebukes, but the serious discipline that would result in their separation from the service is uncommon. Their odds of dying or going mad from bugs on the battlefield are good enough that most of their peers don’t begrudge them their little perks too much.

In the field, psychics can generally expect summary execution if they’re captured. The federation simply lacks the necessary tech and personnel to rehabilitate a psychic. The best they can do is keep them in a medical coma, which is practical in a controlled situation with medical resources readily at hand but completely unserviceable during combat. Psychics understand that capture means death, they carry one "Reaper" light pistol with 9 rounds; it is said the final round is always kept purely for the operative.

Psychics tend to avoid never wear distinguishing insignia or markings in the field. Their load-outs are identical except for carrying their concealed "Reaper" pistol; which provides little tactical benefit. They always dress and serve just as a normal member of their squad, often serving in the same regular mobile infantry uniform. When it’s possible to conceal the source of a psychic effect, they will do so not only to avoid execution on capture but also to avoid the inevitable hail of gunfire should they be identified as a psychic by enemy forces. Most enemy forces will focus fire on a psychic even faster than they will on an identified officer.

Notes:

  • Much like an NCO, a Psychic is used to enhance the overall RP experience of the server, thus making the server feel more alive and unique. As such, you must understand that your character may simply be used in manners that you could deem 'unfair.' For example, your character may suddenly drop and have a seizure to express just how powerful something is, or perhaps to show how large an attacking Arachnid force is when they had attempted to estimate its size through a Psychic ability, which ultimately back-fired.
  • This 'faction' is to be regulated with a very strict set of rules as to prevent the Psychics from 'doing-everything.' If it is ever discovered that you are abusing your position, doing things that you're not suppose to be doing, and so forth, you will be dealt with immediately, perhaps seeing your character drop dead to a blood-cot. As such, rules will be relayed to you, should you be accepted.
  • This 'faction' is to be kept at an incredibly low-population -- As such, you may not hear back for an incredibly long time.
  • Characters who are not new and have 'discovered' their Psychic-abilities will be much weaker than fresh transfer -- They will not be able to grow as fast, learn as quickly and become as powerful as a fresh-transfer. This needs to be made incredibly clear.
  • All applicants must be accepted by myself (Or another MIPOD lead) as we as Xalphox, as this faction is incredibly controlled and regulated, as mentioned before. As such, you must have a high-community standing, be regarded as a good RPer, and must be somewhat knowledgeable regarding the lore behind SST.
  • If you are applying with a character whom is already on the server, you have basically seen the 'Are you a Psychic'-ad and have thus sent a notification to the appropriate institutions.

What is your backstory that would make you believe that your character was a Psychic? OR Why would the Federation believe you were a Psychic as a child?: The backstory would consist of the character finding that he could often perceive the next move of his subject, often by 'concentrating on their mind' as he would put it. This would be put into play in many circumstances, where they would implement it into day-to-day activities to aid themselves. At this point, suspicions of the person to harness psychic abilities from the Federation would be high, so he would be screened for holding these abilities. After passing the screening, he would be deemed as a psychic by the appropriate parties, and undergone required administration to ensure that he was registered and counted for as a psychic.

-Interrogation-

[For the sake of this saying Gerald is Tier 1 even though he would not currently be so.]

(Prisoner sits in a cell after being captured during an ambush)

** Spc. Gerald Kovacs steps into the cell closing the door behind himself, his normal MIPOD insignia and clothes have been switched for the general infantry uniform, "Hello there. Private Stevens is it not?" He then locks the cell door with himself inside. Then takes a moment to center himself and tap into his head and listen to Jacks inner monologue.

/report Listening in to Jacks inner thoughts. Going to try and steer him into thinking about his commands and get names.

Pvt. Jack Stevens: Yea, fuck you want?

Spc. Gerald Kovacs: It is simple, I want to know about that ambush.

** Pvt. Jack Stevens' inner thoughts consist of mainly swearing aimed at the Specialist infront of him but flickering thoughts of the ambush from his perspective do appear, "Fuck would I tell you?!?"

** Spc. Gerald Kovacs sits against the door in a relaxed position, "Hey, no point in getting hostile because it won't help either of us. You want to leave and be free, yes?"

** Pvt. Jack Stevens says, "No I want to take a shite on terra. Course' I wanna' fucking leave." He seems to start thinking of his home and girl 'Jane' back on Sanctuary, the thoughts seem to weed into his head.

Spc. Gerald Kovacs: I like the sass, but seriously the more you help the faster you can get back to Sanctuary and your girl. She's known as Jane right?

** Pvt. Jack Stevens gains a surprised look, "How did you?!"

Spc. Gerald Kovacs: -We know alot about you. We used to be on the same side after all files still linger as it were.

Pvt. Jack Stevens: Fuck... She's not going to be a part of this right?

Spc. Gerald Kovacs: Not unless we find out what we need. So gave the order for that ambush?

** Pvt. Jack Stevens says "The Top, Mason Cormack." although his thoughts spell a different story as he takes his minds to find a lie the name 'Captain Nathan West' pop up more than one as he thinks about the situation.

/report Do I think Captain west is the person he is trying to protect?

[PM] Jack Stevens: Yes.

Spc. Gerald Kovacs: -Captain West. Thank you.

** Pvt. Jack Stevens again even more shocked than before, "WHAT? How did you?"

** Spc. Gerald Kovacs then removes his MIPOD berret  puts it on and leave, "We always know."

Pvt. Jack Stevens: Son of a bitch.

How active are you?: 'Cause of my internship I'm less active but normally I look on the server every day.

Is this character already active on the Server?: Yeah, it's Alexander Tschenkowitsch aka. Lick.

What is your backstory that would make you believe that your character was a Psychic? OR Why would the Federation believe you were a Psychic as a child?:

Alexander Tschenkowitsch was a psychiatrist for a long time. He learned new situations and also met every day new people.

He was pretty good at his job and was damn happy to help those poor individuals. One day they were a new patient. It was a nine-year-old kid turning insane after a coma.

The child got in after he awoke from a coma. In the documents, the coma was caused by stress. For Alexander, it was just another poor patient.

Joseppe, so was the child's name, was sure that he heard voices that no one could hear. Like ghosts.

At the first two sessions, Alexander tried to make it clear to him that these voices are only in his head and not real.

This procedure was not effective so Alexander tried a few other ways to help Joseppe. At his third session, he tried to search his subconscious for a trauma that might happen earlier.

After this failed attempt Alexander tried another way to help him and tried didn't success either. At the fifth session he was telling the child he could hear the voices as well.

After two hours of talking Alexander was not quiet sure what to do with Joseppe.

Every test that he made pointed to nothing. No trauma. No abuse. No nothing.

It didn't make sense at all. So he tried to use a new strategy after Ronald D. Laing.

After Laing, a psychosis was an expression of suffering. So Alexander once again tried to find the 'cause of this psychosis.

At the 10th session he was telling the child he could hear the voices as well. He was about the find out the 'cause as Alexander heard a voice.

He asked Joseppe if he said anything. Joseppe looked at Alexander with big eyes. He kept repeating "Did you hear it? You heard it did you?! Tell me you did!"

Our doctor was more than confused. Joseppe had this shimmer in his eyes like a 10-year-old solved a very difficult task in a math test.

To quote Alexanders mind "Look at him. Like he was the only man in a universe full of woman and found another man like himself".

After Alexander took a break for 5 minutes he headed to the session room. He heard something as he entered the room. But that one was just a mumble and not a voice.

He took some notes and sent Joseppe back to his room. After 5 days he had the last session with Joseppe. Alexander's clinic was ordered to send the kid to the other clinic. In the last session, he told Joseppe that he will be okay and better personnel will have talks to him. But right before Alexander left the room he heard again a strong voice. He turned around and asked the nurse and Joseppe if they said anything. Then he quickly left the room. After a week he had some headaches and sometimes nosebleeds. He still hears sometimes voices and got some feelings about something o happens. The rate of nightmares has also increased.  Sometimes he thought that he just heard somebody's mind. He had something like that as a child and because Alexander didn't want to end like a maniac he learned to ignore for most of the cases. After some years passed he got married and had two kids. His wife had citizenship and pushed him to do the citizenship too.

So Alexander enlisted himself and just wanted to serve a quick time. Her wife told him the M.I. would be the best for him and she knows some people there to help him get through.

And so Alexander joined the 112th on the Grant.

He learned about the psychic powers after talking to some personnel and seeing the psychic-ad. And maybe Alexander is psychic too.

Write out a situation in which you would have to use one of your abilities?:

Alexander Tschenkowitsch enters the room.

Alexander Tschenkowitsch sits down infront of the prisoner

Alexander Tschenkowitsch: Good day to you.

Prisoner: Good fuck yourself to you.

Alexander Tschenkowitsch: Thanks.

The prisoner tries to spit at Alexander

'Cause Alexander is sitting he can't avoid to be hit be the spit.

The spit hits Alexanders face. After hit he wipes the spit away.

Alexander Tschenkowitsch: Why are you people like this? Anyway-- Would you tell me about the position of that supply post?

Prisoner: Ofcourse it's right behind you.

Alexander Tschenkowitsch laughes for two seconds and then turns silent.

Alexander starts to entering the mind of the prisoner.

He then rolls maybe over 60.

Alexander asks a admin if he gets any information like the position of the supplypost or personal information.

Prisoner: You creep, going to do something?

Maybe a admin tells Alexander that the prisoner has family like a wife or kids. Maybe even the position of the supply post.

Alexander Tschenkowitsch: Yeah maybe. But not to you. I hate to say that but your kids may die 'cause of your incooperation.

Prisoner: What are you saying? I don't have kids!

Alexander Tschenkowitsch: Oh yes you have. Martin and Lea, two wonderful kids. Nevermind them, they will be gone in no time.

Prisoner: Fuck you!

Alexander Tschenkowitsch: You know it's easy. The supply post or your kids.

The prisoner seems really angry and is sweating a lot.

Alexander Tschenkowitsch: But don't take to long.

Alexander repeats the following: Tic tac, tic tac.

Prisoner:  Aw for fuck sake! It's in the Ulam-System. The desert planet...

Alexander Tschenkowitsch: Wow didn't even ask me if we let your kids alive.

Prisoner: Ofcourse you will! I told you what i know!

Alexander sees through the prisoners mind, checking if he says the truth...

He maybe rolls over 60

The admin may says he's lying

Alexander Tschenkowitsch: How much are your kids worth for you? Enough to risk their lives for a dirty lie?

Prisoner: I didn't lie! I'm telling you the truth!

The prisoner starts sweating more and more.

He's wondering how he could know that and is clearly nervous.

Alexander Tschenkowitsch: You're not that intelligent, but do me and your kids a favour. Do the right thing please.

Prisoner: Fine... check the Alabra-System. You will find it there. But don't do any harm to my kids! I swear i'll kill you!

Alexander again chacks the mind of the prisoner if he's saying the truth.

He maybe rolls over 60.

The admin may say yes.

Alexander Tschenkowitsch: I never will do harm to kids for god sake. But thanks for the information you provided.

Alexander while he stands up and leaves the room he's saying "Have a nice day"

What is your backstory that would make you believe that your character was a Psychic? OR Why would the Federation believe you were a Psychic as a child?:  Ivan grew up in a small town in Ukraine under the Federation. It wasn't until late into Ivan's life where his abilities began to become more apparent. Ivan was a smart kid in High School, which carried him to greater things. He had plans to become a child psychologist, however, took interest in the Mobile Infantry shortly after college. He was troubled as a teenager and early adult and got into some rather unworthy lines of work involving thievery, however, on the three cases he was caught with surveillance evidence, he was oddly not punished. Records regarding Ivan noted the incidents as "Resolved by matter of compromise by all involved parties." but upon Ivan's enlistment a few years later, the Federation thought the incidents alarming. When presented with Ivan's medical records it was also noted that he was prone to seizures as a small child but they had passed and thought to be a side effect of his week early birth, these returned to him in his mid 20's. Before cutting him from the enlistment process due to a faulty medical record he was given a Psych test and evaluation which determined him prone to Psychic behavior and deemed him a proper Psychic. He went on to join the Mobile Infantry Psychic Operations Detachment and received his proper training.

Write out a situation in which you would have to use one of your abilities?: The Mobile Infantry begin to progress forward into a small and seemingly desolate town. The majority of them begin to clear houses and search for their objective, a hostile HVT, kill or capture. Ivan is no different to this action, as he enters a house alongside another Infantryman, inside would be two bandits, one unsuspectingly hiding in a closet, the other unarmed out in the open. Ivan approaches the man holding his fire, he'd make a quick gesture to the other trooper towards another door in the house before placing his hand on the bandit's head after demanding his surrender , and reading through his recent thoughts for the possible whereabouts of the HVT. Upon inspection into the man's mind, Ivan senses the other bandit watching over him in the closet, quickly turning and raising his weapon, firing into the wooden closet. Soon after the body of said bandit slides out of the closet and onto the floor.

What is your backstory that would make you believe that your character was a Psychic? OR Why would the Federation believe you were a Psychic as a child?:

Cornelius Zeem was not an ordinary child. He was quite intellectual for his age. He probably started to talk when he reached the age of 2. In the age of 3 he was able to read, write, and also solve difficult math equations. Besides that his powers were sealed and medical research didn't show Psychic predisposition. However in future he choosed his own life path: He was bored with education and probably give up on it. As a result, his marks would drop to average. He was dropped out from university, and so his miserable life had started: Alcohol, brawls, useless life spending. Later on he thought about enlisting M.I. to try his luck in the infantry and probably to find his place in the life.

Write out a situation in which you would have to use one of your abilities?:

One incident changed his life. He was on the mission which was consisting in the ship wreckage investigation.  That was the day when he made first close contact with Skinnie. This creature touched his forehead. As a result his sealed powers were awaked, however on that day he really got no idea what was happening. The second part of this journey would be the mission to protect the 2 L.T. Wise on her research task. However this mission ended badly - Wise's brain was eaten by Supermind bug and troopers leaved the planet in hurry. The main idea is that Zeem was chosen to assist Wise on inspecting the cave, that was presumed to be the hive of the Supermind bug. Wise was mind-weak and got caught by this creature, but Zeem actually struggled till the end - his resistance ability was high. He also felt the presence of mind control and saw clearly that 2 L.T. was no more the owner to her body. He failed to save the woman, but managed to escape. After that he began to realize that he can resist the mind control. That's why the idea to apply for Military Intelligence was born.

What is your backstory that would make you believe that your character was a Psychic? OR Why would the Federation believe you were a Psychic as a child?:

- As a child, Iris was always an outcast. From the lunch table, to the playground, she never seemed to be around the others, or follow anyone around. She seemed very much content with this. In her classes, she frequently answered everyone's questions, sometimes this frustrated people, since no one likes a know-it-all. Most importantly, she seemed to know when something was coming. Be it a bully, or a stray ball coming from behind. At age 10, her family was in a restuarant when she sudden felt the need to leave. After pulling her parents by the hand out of the building, a drunk driver had slammed into the restuarant mere moments after Kvasir's departure. The car had forced it's way inside, crushing the booth at which they had previously sat, along with multiple other booths. The Federation had taken notice of young Iris well before this point, and had then taken her away to be trained.

Write out a situation in which you would have to use one of your abilities?:

Walking along a beaten road on a wooded planet, the platoon was heading towards a town suspected to be housing seperatist forces. As their feet thudded on the dirt road, they made their way to the town. Whilst on approach, Iris would get a gut feeling. Images of a barrage of fire coming from a treeline passed through her mind. The treeline to their west sat quiet for the moment. Iris would tell her superiors of her feeling and to get into the nearby foxholes for cover. After the men of the platoon quickly slid into foxholes, machine gun fire erupted from the western treeline, and an airstrike was called on the treeline by the men, safely in cover.

What is your backstory that would make you believe that your character was a Psychic? OR Why would the Federation believe you were a Psychic as a child?:

Sam had been tested when he was a young child and it had came back negative for the first two times for Psychic abilities. The Federation was sure that Sam had no Psychic abilities and had sent him off. It wasn't until He had gotten tangled up in a bank heist executed by [Data Expunged], [Data Expunged], and [Data Expunged] in the [Redacted] countryside and had shown crude precognition potential when explaining what he had felt during the heist. After that attempted heist Sam's case had been followed by [Data Expunged] due to his potential usefulness. After Sam had prevented a robbery of a store in [Redacted] he was taken in by Federation staff and trained in his powers. Due to his nature of being quiet and perceptive he was a quick learner and had caught up to even some of the people they had picked up as children. When his training had concluded he had vanished into the system, no one knowing about his complicated past.

Write out a situation in which you would have to use one of your abilities?:

Three MIs have been accused of the murder of a Sargent, All three are playing innocent and the ship is short staffed the way it is so losses are to be cut to a minimum. The three MIs are escorted to the briefing room and Sam has been ordered to use telepathy to find the MI that had killed the Sargent. The first MI had simply been in the bar for the past two hours wasting his life away over a whiskey cola and he was released from custody back to his duties. The second MI had stumbled across the Sargent's body and had gone into shock because of the graphic nature of his death, He was released to the med bay for physiological treatment. The third MI was the culprit, He has pushed the Sargent over the edge of the railing in the cargo hold and had then cut his face off using a knife he had gotten from the kitchen, then he proceeded to cover the mans body in fuel and urinate on him before lighting the corpse on fire and then urinating on him one last time. The MI had then been sent to the brig before being sent to a maximum security prison on [Redacted]. Sam hadn't been seen for twenty minutes after the incident, presumably he was in the bathroom vomiting.
