sure its .net sst but still

it aint easy shit u feel me homie

martial arts is a hard thing to retain if you don’t consistently do it. Idk how long basic training is the SST-verse (I’m leaning towards films rather than book, seeing as that’s our primary inspiration), but, speaking from my person experience, between marksmanship, combat conditioning, military customs and courtesies, military tactics, combat care, history, equipment training, etc, it’s not really feasible for every boot to leave basic being a martial arts expert. hell I’ve been involved in various disciplines for over half a decade and I can still get fucked up.

plus this is an opt-in program, just like the real world inflicted MCMAP, so, it’s not like we’re forcing people to participate. Just a sort of encouragement for off-drop RP, beyond spending 92% of the time in the bar

i mean (lil bit off topic) i feel like grappleing is the only real useful technique as realisticly when fighitng someone ur most likely going to end up on the ground. especially if the setting is like ruins or something. I also feel that the servers CQC is a lil' bit too clean if that makes sense. Like realisticly ur not going to square up to a guy in a boxing formation if he has a gun. Like say someone comes out of the door next to u. IRL the best thing to do wowuld probably be to grapple him instead of "Square up nigga!" Just my thoughts on some CQC shit

MCMAP is essential a mixed martial art. our training consists of how to use your rifle in close combat, a knife, a ‘weapon of opportunity’ (ie an object you can find around you), your fists, grappling, etc. it’s pretty much beat into your head that using your fists is a last ditch effort.

  3. It doesn’t seem like that complicated of task, imo. I’m not sure how Silent is going to run it, seeing as he’s the one with Staff approval, but it could be a simple system of:

-Allow trusted players to assume position as instructors

-Utilize a shared doc or spreadsheet to record training sessions

-Once a player meets the assigned requisites, allot them the bonus, and log it. We use the same system for Psychics, after all

It’s a simple enough system to both grant a sense of progression to layers beyond promotions, while also encouraging a further amount of interaction between NCOs (Or whoever is assigned as Instructor) and their peers.

  4. Just now, Silent said:

I've already brought this up both ICly and OOCly, and it has been approved on both fronts. I'm working with Franco on developing the roll system, but it is currently at around +5 - +15. The reason it hasn't been publicized is because I've been trying to turn a 273 page UMSC regulation PDF into a smaller, more user-friendly set of information.

Oh, well, sick. If you need any help, I’m open. Currently on a green belt course myself.

  5. So this is just something I’ve been having on my mind. I’ve heard talk of it server-wise, but can’t seem to find any publications of it on the server, and thought it could use some expending upon.

So, in my real world experience, rank in the military isn’t necessarily tied to your experience in martial arts prowess. I’ve met staff sergeants who remain grey belts, and I know corporals who are already working on their blacks. Despite this, I don’t necessarily disagree with the current roll system regarding close combat, however, I also believe amendments could be made to encourage both ship based role play, as well as a sense of personal development.

Hence forth, I am suggesting the introduction of the Mobile Infantry Martial Arts Program, or simply MIMAP. Heavily inspired (you mean ripped?) from the USMC’s martial arts program, MIMAP would cover a variety of armed and unarmed martial arts, ranging from knife and rifle techniques, joint manipulation, and good old pugilism.

Bonuses to close combat rolls would be granted on a belt based system. These would not stack with rank-based rolls, with the later holding directive over belt-based rolls (ex: a PFC holding Grey Belt is granted a roll bonus of +15, rather than the typical +10. Once reaching the rank of LCpl, this bonus remains +15, and, upon reaching Cpl, will follow the typical +20, assuming they haven’t chosen to belt up).

I believe this system can hold some advantages, in terms of both realism and roleplay opportunities. Having a tangible benefit can encourage players to ‘PT’ or train in their off time in pursuit of a belt, while also providing NCOs who opt in as instructors with the opportunity to run martial arts courses.

This is simply a concept system, and I’m entirely open to discussion.

Or the idea sucks and I’m gay

  6. One thing I really like creating is culture groups (Cause, y’know, it’s nearly been 300 years, new cultures tend to form). For inspiration, I tend to look to history, cause, surprise, Humans are a very diverse and interesting people.

As vague as it is, I’ll often select a random Wikipedia page, and click through until something sets off my creative juices. So far my first lore-contribution, the Desorics, was largely inspired by reading Wikipedia articles on Jewish Discrimination and the Black Irish, among other subjects.

A lot of thing can be easily tweaked to fit within the SST universe, so finding inspiration in the lore of real life, and other media, is a really big aid, at least to me.

One foot lies in the water before her, awash in the sensations that overwhelm her. The other sits firmly upon the Earth, dirty, raw, but ultimately practical. The bird sits and watches. It's thoughts unknown, nor its intentions. The star of her faith hangs overhead. When the water dries, and the land grows hard and stale, the woman shall look to it. Whether is mantras will guide her or abandon her, we can only guess."

    Initial Report

"Subject Blaise is an interesting case, the first Desoric I've had the pleasure of conducting a report upon. And unique she is. Subject Blaise is adamant in regards to her cultural and ethical heritage, within a private setting, that is. She makes no effort to conceal any Desoric markings or identifiers, and even commonly dons their traditional 'Noric' print. Despite this openness, Subject Blaise has expressed hesitation, and in come cases, borderline fear of backlash by outsiders. Thankfully, early observations conducted upon the crew and service members of the Grant have failed to turn up any cause for physical concern. This fear is believed to originate in Subject Blaise's secluded upbringing on the colony of Pallas, where a life within a Desoric colony negated much need for outside interaction. By my personal power, I have scheduled biweekly counseling for the subject, in order to facilitate an efficient.

Beyond their Desoric origins, Subject Blaise displays incredible care and compassion. The subject had it quite clear of her desire to serve within the medical detachment, and early reports have flagged her as an efficient, empathetic medical technician. Despite this behavior, Subject Blaise is slow to extend relations to a non-professional domain, believed to be, again, a symptom of her secluded childhood. Subject does routinely communicate on good terms with fellow Medical staff, and has been encouraged to branch out into the separate divisions."

    Follow-On (16/12/2998)

"I expression some level of concern regarding Subject Blaise's recent encounter with a psychic force. All though initially logged as upbeat and altruistic, albeit rather shy, Subject Blaise has demonstrated a number of deviations from this typical behavior, ranging from apathy to outright aggression. With questioned on the matter, the Subject was hesitant to respond, and attributed to changes to work related stress. I will be forwarding a request to Subject Blaise's overseer, Technical Sergeant Hawthorne,  to monitor the Subject's condition, and to alert staff if any alarming changes occur."

On a personal level, Blaise has difficulties reading the woman, no doubt in part due to the Technical Sergeant's proficiency in masking her psychic trails. All though serious, Blaise holds no ill regards to Hawthorne's demeanor, and believes this attitude most likely stems from a past incident, or simply the stress of her occupation. Despite the formalities of their relationship, Blaise finds Hawthorne to be a supportive friend, and highly skilled teacher.

    -

What is your backstory that would make you believe that your character was a Psychic? OR Why would the Federation believe you were a Psychic as a child?:

Blaise was born within a Desoric enclave, upon the colony of Pallas. The isolated nature of the enclave meant very limited intervention was conducted by the Federation. Newborns were typically cataloged in the nearest UCF hospital, administered basic test and screenings, and returned to their respective community, with little in the way of monitoring or screenings. Even in education, involvement by the Federation was scarce, lingering only to carry out the typical standardized testing. Due to this limited exposure, and an overall fear of the outside, Federal society, Blaise was hesitant to openly express any thoughts or concerns regarding her feelings. Test results were inconclusive, retroactively attributed to faulty machinery. For all intents and purposes, by Federal results, Blaise was a typical, if somewhat awkward, civilian. Despite this, Blaise felt that something was off regarding her mental state. The young Desoric demonstrated an extremely precise ability in regards to reading one's emotional state, even that of strangers. In her teenager years, Blaise became a common volunteer at her community's clinic, where her touch was renown among her fellow Desorics, for its ability to set even the most anxious of souls at rest.

Though most simply accredited this ability to refined social skills and a 'magic touch', Blaise felt off. Fearful to seek a diagnosis outside her secure Enclave. in regards to her Desoric ethnicity, the young woman instead pursued enlistment within the Mobile Infantry, both as a mean of breaking the negative notions of her people, as well as to seek greater information into her condition. Early off in her tenure of basic training, the Desoric's instructors were quick to note her ability to unite and inspire her fellow recruits, passing the information along justly. Following the conclusion of her platoons period of training, Blaise would instead be transferred to a psychic screening and development unit, where her abilities would be rightly recorded and influenced.

Write out a situation in which you would have to use one of your abilities?:

The drop was like any other. A search and destroy, encompassing some bombed out city, on a bombed out colony, in the swatch of space just waiting to be bombed out. Urban combat was harsh, close, deadly. Vantage points afforded a variety of positions for enemy snipers, and the overarching windows and roof tops were a birthday party for ambushes. Despite the efforts of military intelligence, the environment was ever changing, enemy positions altering on an hourly basis. The entirety of the 112th had been assigned to this urban sprawl, each platoon combing block after block. Despite their size and support, the units were quickly amassing casualties, the aforementioned snipers and ambushes wearing down the large rifle platoons. Blaise's unit was no different.

Luck seemed to smile upon the Desoric's unit, however. Following a brief engagement with an insurgent fire team, Blaise and Co were left with a single enemy POW, one that had been badly wounded in the firefight. Despite the MI's effort to address the Innie's soon-to-be-fatal condition, the prisoner was uncooperative, kicking and lashing out at the attending medics with whatever energy and vigor they had left. Blaise, one of the respective medics, turned to her respective squad leader, offering to try her own hand. With nothing else to lose, and time a precious commodity, the Corporal permitted it.

As the flailing insurgent was restrained, Blaise extended a hand, palm pressing gently upon the man's forehead. With a set of clenched eyes, the Medic began projecting a variety of comforting images. A blooming meadow, the laughter of a friend, the touch of a lover. The Medic was visibly strained, her subject clearly aware of her intentions. But as time passed, the sensations mounted. The warm thoughts of home had worked their magic. The insurgent, once a thrashing dissident, now lie a sedated pupil. As the attending medics worked their magic, Blaise fared little better. The strain of the act induced a piercing headache upon the young psychic.

Finishing their duties, the team began their interrogation of the stabilized insurgent. Despite the lovely sensations projected forth, the rebel was far from cooperative. Physical incentives were out of the question, the prisoners condition far too delicate. With deadlines to reach, Blaise, still frazzled and worn, offered her services once more. Though dangerous, the Corporal was unwilling to risk continuing forth blind. Laying a hand against the Insurgent's brow, the Psychic thought long and hard. A strained croak erupted from her lips, posture beginning to tremble. Her opponent, despite a valiant defense, began to incur a toll. Flashes of morbid imagery, tingles of loneliness and hopelessness, fear and death shock him to his core. The once proud rebel was rendered a quivering wreck, pleads of mercy crying out between sobs. As the order was given to halt, Blaise nearly collapsed, bloodshot eyes accompanying her twisted, worn appearance.

As the quivering rebel rambled on and on of sniper nests and choke points, the haggard Blaise staggered past. Between drilling headaches and an overarching sense of nausea, the Psychic was far from fine. Despite the gravity of her conditions, the Medic was forced to soldier on. As the last city blocks were swiftly cleared (No doubt in thanks to the Psychic’s labors), Blaise could only imagine the warm bed, and stern debriefing, that awaited her.

  11. I'll take an excuse to talk about my characters, any day.

So Cheslock was born into a rather typical family of Citizens. None were entirely gung-ho about service to the Federation, and primarily attained the title of 'Citizen' for the fiscal and educational benefits, among other things. Military service was never looked down upon, but it wasn't high on the list of options either. Simply a choice in a sea of options. Cheslock was never an incredibly patriotic or athletic figure. He had grips with the Federation, but they were nuanced and minor at best. His original plan was to simply attend college in order to pursue a career in chemical engineering, which was, in turn, to be used to pursue in career in .

Though I haven't explicitly stated Cheslock as having any sort of mental disability, I've more or less played him as a very OCD, ADD-like figure. Unable to attend specialized, high-end universities due to high tutition, Cheslock originally attended community college, but found the menial book work boring and difficult to follow on. Combined with his separation from his father's construction firm thanks to an accidental demolition on a site (An scenario that was thankfully swept under the rug by his father), Cheslock found an opportunity to both gain tuition needed to attend an appropriate university, as well as cater to his interests in demolitions and general engineering through the Mobile Infantry.

Cheslock was born more or less as a tribute to the character "Wendy Cheslock" from Valkyria Chronicles (Wendell, Wendy, eh? Eh?), an explosive-obsessed shut-in, but obviously had to be tweaked in order to fit in with the more "realistic" setting of SST. He is still very early in his development, but I'm hoping that his exposure to the culture and chaos of the Mobile Infantry will lead to some expansion in his status as a former recluse, and show that there's more to his role than "making things go boom".

  12. For my current character, Wendell Cheslock, I have him written as the only one in his immediate family to have entered military service via the Mobile Infantry, despite everyone in his family being citizens/in the process of attaining citizenship. Robert Heinlein, author of Starship Troopers, stated that only about 5% of people attain "Veteran" (The novel's equivalent of Citizenship) status through direct military service, with the vast majority instead attaining it through other civil service. While this is a debated statement (And the fact we're based upon the movie rather than the novel), it did get me thinking as to other ways one might attain Citizenship.

Cheslock's dad, for instance, went most of his early adult life without citizenship, managing a private construction firm. Following destruction in the colonies from one of the many Bug conflicts, in chose to devote his company to repair and rebuilding efforts, at great financial cost. While not risking life or limb, his decision sacrificed much profit and time, and demonstrated his willingness to support the Federation.

On another hand, Cheslock's sister, while not a member of a military branch, instead works in a Federation R&D department, designing and testing explosives. All though she isn't on front line service, I'd imagine her (And many others supporting the war effort) would be considered worthy of Citizenship for their devotion to sustaining the Federation. However, I believe it should be expected that her service may be much longer than Cheslock's on, due to the difference in sacrifices the two risk (One being energy and time, and the other being life and limb).

It's in my belief that any sort of service that benefits the Federation and its people, alongside just what exactly is being risked and sacrificed, can warrant Citizenship. After all, one of the reasons we were able to assure ourselves a victory in WWII was not only the actions of generals and troopers, but the production, development and support of those on the homefront.

"Early sessions have developed a rather odd, if interesting report. Subject Cheslock, is, by all accounts, a completely sane and competent figure, so much so he has been accepted into the often hazardous engineering field, yet displays a zeal for explosives munitions that far exceed typical Human interest. Subject Cheslock was more than willing to recount a plethoral of stories and experiences with various explosives, detonations, and general destruction (Even offering to demonstrate the creation of thermite via a tinfoil wrap and knife). While this level of interest might draw red flags for maniac behavior, Subject Cheslock was quite calm and collected in other sections of questioning, quick to joke and provide honest through response, even acknowledging his enthusiasm with a level of self awareness.

Beyond his appetite for destruction and subsequent creation, socially, Subject Cheslock again raises brows. Despite being fully capable at holding conversations and following social cues, Subject was more than willing to admit his friend group prior to military service was abnormally small, consisting of only a handful of close acquaintances. Subject Cheslock was quick to justify his decision, claiming that 'a social life is a rather big distraction'. This same ideology applied to both alcoholic intake and romantic, and even sexual, encounters. In layman's terms, Subject Cheslock is quick to hyper-focus on fields of interest, with little concern for outside distractions."

    Personal History
    Spoiler

Wendell Cheslock was born on June 24th, within the Oregon region of Terra, in the year 2275. Born to a pair of Federation Citizens, Cheslock had a privileged, comfortable life for the duration of his childhood. Mother a pharmacist and Father mangar to a private construction firm, Cheslock was afforded a hefty early education, receiving in-depth tutoring into various fields, including mathematics and science. Although unappealing in athletic fields, Cheslock more than compensated with involvement into various technical extracurricular activities, ranging from robotics and cyber security, to STEM and, yes, even the Anime Club. Despite a heavy involvement within his school’s programs, Cheslock was noticeably reserved, even antisocial during select periods. His friend group, all though close, remained considerably small throughout his education, and it was rare for Cheslock to leave home on weekends, preferring instead to carry on various side projects. Despite these behaviors, Cheslock displayed no outright debilitating conditions, and regularly acknowledged his tendency to isolate himself in his work.

Graduating Cum Laude in 2293, Cheslock initially struggled in pursuing follow-on education. Despite high GPA and standardized testing scores, Cheslock possessed no drive to enlist for Federal Service, limiting his scholarship opportunities. Unsure of his future in life, Cheslock found employment within his Father’s construction firm. The work, while tiring, was rather interesting to the young man, who found great enjoyment in physically altering and changing his environment. He developed an especially penchant liking for the destruction factor in the work, finding a thrill in the rush and shock wave of TNT. Two years after his graduation, Cheslock choose to attend the local (and rather humbling) education of his community college, with a drive to pursue an eventual degree in Chemical Engineering.

Despite high performance, Cheslock found the heavy book work to be tiring and uninteresting. With a focus upon textbooks and spreadsheets, the young man found little time to pursue outside activities that satied his interest in transformation and creation. Seeking to expand into a more specialized, technical college, Cheslock found his only hope of affording tuition would be Federal Service. Ceasing his college education in the summer of 2297, Cheslock’s attempts at enlistment would be soon hampered by the invasion of Terra, by the Progenitor race. Locked in a life or death struggle, Cheslock turned his attention to assisting Federation forces in the safe evacuation of his community, aiding in construction of defenses and logistical needs. After ensuring his family’s safe evacuation, Cheslock joined them, relocating to the world of Karrus. As his sister began service as an arms designer and producer, Cheslock began his enlistment process into the Mobile Infantry, signing as a Combat Engineer.

For the next half year, Cheslock endured the grueling, tough and often humiliating entry level training of the wartime Federation, quickly turning into a developed, if somewhat awkward, soldier. His high performance in follow-on training resulted in Cheslock’s assignment to the renown 112th Rifle Battalion, known for their high versatility and success rate across the Infantry. With a soft demeanor by his side, Cheslock began his service to the Federation.

"She's weird, heh. She speaks English, but I can't understand most of what she says. But the things I do understand, are usually nice. Seems to be a favorite among the unit, though I'm not sure why. Come to think of it, most girls are...Heh, anyways, she has some beautiful hardware. Makes me excited when I see them in action. Would kill to get my hands one them, heh. Rough them up, give them a test drive, see what they're made of. But, heh, I don't think they'll be so keen on letting me toy with them. Forty millimeters are for the Grunts, after all..."

"He's nice! At least, for the Mobile Infantry. Doesn't seem to keen on yelling (At least, at me, that is). Seems to recognize my knack for causing 'booms', heh. Think he wants me to advance, gain some weight on the rank, but it's beyond his control. I don't mind. My works fixing things. Leading is just a side bit."

"A Sergeant. My Sergeant. She's...Crude, heh. Gave me the introduction and such. Quick to criticize too, even in the worst of times. Maybe that's why she was booted from the Marauder...Anyway, I suppose she has a lot to pass, or maybe she has a lot to nitpick, heh. I'm not complaining, just stating the observations. I'll have to follow her, one way or another.

Even has a big grin beneath that helmet as the TON makes fireworks, heh. He's encouraged me to widened my field of training, become something of an asset past the explosives and rockets. Likes to keep me grounded, when I get a little bit excited, heh, heh. I'm glad to have found a friend."

"Apart of Intelligence. They're an odd sort. Bisecting brains and cracking open memories. Not literally, but they give me the shakes, Hawthorne being no exception. I'm sure they're fine, maybe even friendly, but something tells me we won't be speaking much, at least on pleasant terms. She was there for that...Let's call it an 'encounter' with the deer. She knows something we don't. That's fine, but, I don't feel too comfortable thinking about it."

    Character's College Explanation:
Wendell, while a successful student in high school, grew loathsome of intensive class and book work. Initially pursuing a field in chemical engineering, Wendell eventually came to realize he desired a much more "hands-on" approach, and, dropping out of college following the end of his second year, instead pursued enlistment within the Mobile Infantry forces, to better satisfy his desires at field work. All though educated, his lack of an actual degree prevented his admittance into the MI Officer Corps, thusly providing him with the opportunity to instead pursue an enlisted occupation.

    Psychology
    :: Psychological Report
    Spoiler

    - Recent sessions have led us to determine that 3Spc Atkins carries some remnants of trauma from his prior service aboard the Audie Murphy. Acclimation to a relatively new chain of command and colleagues has been particularly slow, Atkins hesitant to closely cooperate with fellow medical technicians. Team-building sessions are highly recommended, along with close monitoring for possible developments of traumatic stress disorders

    - 3Spc Atkins is believed to suffer from acute insomnia, with possibility of developing into a full chronic condition. Atkins should be prescribed to a sleep specialist upon availability, or else he stands at risk of developing symptoms including but not limited to; muscle weariness, double vision and hallucinations

-Early personality screening marked 3Spc Atkins as both an altruistic and idealistic. Repeated exposure to mentally stressful situations in both combat and operations is believed to have resulted in the development of seemingly apathetic personality, especially in regards to junior-most personnel. This indifference, however, is believed to be a defensive coping mechanism. Atkins is still believed to embody a sense of humanitarian empathy in his actual execution of medical duties

    Strength

"Usually we think of strength in physical terms - big arms, powerful legs - but there is also inner strength. Inner strength comes from an exercise of the heart muscle. It is perseverance, courage, resolve and composure - qualities that help us endure when times are tough. In the past, a person with inner strength was commonly said to have character; he or she could be counted on in the darkest moments."

    Background

    Spoiler

Riley Atkins was born to Oscar and Aviel Atkins, both civilians, in the city of Fargo, in the former region of North Dakota. Relatively  privileged in his upbringing, Atkins was well off in the field of academics, attending private institutes and consistently placing in the upper echelon of his classmates, particularly in biology and psychology. Outside of study, Atkins was active in extracurricular fields, serving in the varsity position for his high school's welterweight boxing division, and a regular school photographer on the off season. During breaks, Atkins was an active participate in his community, volunteering in clinics and aiding his local synagogue.

Following graduation, Atkins was offered a variety of positions at institutes across North America. However, their tuition reached far outside the budget of him and his family. Instead, hoping time would scrounge up the necessary funds, Atkins chose to attend community college for a brief time. As his two-year degree came to a close, Atkins found himself no closer to attending these prestigious universities. Spurred by the scholarship programs, and seeking the opportunity to provide lifesaving aid to those who require it, Atkins enlisted into the Mobile Infantry, earning a qualification as a field medical technician, before being assigned to the 112th, serving aboard the Audie Murphy.

Throughout his assignment to the Murphy, Atkins developed and refined his emergency triage capabilities and post care duties, taking on a secondary billet as an unofficial psychologist for many of the 112th's junior most Troopers. Junior to a Corporal Rhodes and Lieutenant Geier, Atkins came to hold the rank of Specialist, established himself as a reliable component within the ground combat element of the Murphy, and even entered into a sanctioned romantic relationship with Senior Specialist Saige Shields of military intelligence. But, as his deployment stretched, mental baggage began to mount upon the young medic. A growing psychological record red-lighted a possible breakdown in the young man's future. Seeking to avoid this, Atkins was offered an non-military billet as a medical technician on a budding frontier colony. Spurred on my the encouragement of his colleagues, as well as a mighty convincing pitch, Atkins hesitantly took on the role, leaving the ranks of the 112th.

For the next nine months, Atkins diligently fulfilled his duties, administering medical care and supervision to the small community. His name slowly faded from the minds and memories of his former comrades, and even his romantic relationship devolved to a simple biweekly exchange of text documents. For all intents and purposes, Atkin's military career had slipped into his past, his future now tied to the backwater planet. Though talks of secession were murmured amongst the population, the colonies small size and dependence upon the UCF-loyal inner colonies (The world's primary export were luxury fruits and other farm grown products) quickly stamped away any serious considerations.

As fate would have it, however, Atkins military service was far from complete. Darkness began to envelop the colony's sisters; communications, trade and travel ceased over the course of a short month. Fear and unease spread through the small world like wildfire. With little in the way of Federal authority to bind them in place, droves of colonists fled their livelihood, seeking safety in the arms of the inner Colonies. Atkins stood as one of the last to leave, ensuring the weak and sick of the colony could safely depart. His choice nearly cost him fatally. As the last of the vessels moved to depart the system, an anomaly reared its head. Alien in nature, Atkins could only manage a passing glance, enough to send his heart sinking to the deepest trenches of his body.

The vessel made its escape, jump after jump, carrying it closer and closer to the heart of the Federation. As the refugees gleamed more and more information, the gravity of the situation finally mounted upon the Medic. With the news of the Audie Murphy's destruction finally reaching the young Atkins, he was spurred once more to don his uniform, reenlisting back into the arms of the 112th.
