Joseph Smith's followers swarmed the towns routinely proclaimed to be the site of a New Jerusalem as frequently as they were booted from state to state. The Mormons overwhelmed the populations of these small American hamlets and quickly began to dominate the social, political, and business spheres of the communities with a clannish veracity. The hard working denizens of these towns took offense to the Mormons' hostile practices towards them, and formed bands and militias to reclaim their communities. Bloody skirmishes ensued, further fueled by the mutilation of several state militia members in the fall of 1838. The Mormons were recognized even then by the government to be a threat to the public, and enacted legislation to recognize them as enemies of the state. Mormons even raided caravans and looted towns in the early days of their journey westward. The Mormon people have had a rocky relationship with governments from the beginning, and the Federation is no different. One of the most prominent issues that splinter groups of the Church of Latter Day Saints and the Federation butt heads on is the restrictions placed upon space travel, and it dates as far back to the dawn of the Cherenkov Drive. Mormonism was one of the few terrestrial religions that had incorporated a spiritual outer space into their doctrines. Mormons expressed profound interest in searching for holy bodies such as the prophesied planet of Kolob, supposedly located in the far reaches of space. With the introduction of the Cherenkov Drive, the amount of control the Federation could exercise over where a person could go was suddenly limited. A new frontier for colonization had been opened to the Mormons, and they wasted no time in trying to exploit it. fig. 12, a crude star chart from the Book of Abraham authored by Joseph Smith. Indeed, the events of Port Joe Smith being fresh in the minds of citizen and civilian alike, the First Bug War does not seem to have halted Mormon attempts at self-government on the fringes of Federation space. While the Federation has permitted the existence of non-affiliated religious colonies in the past, many of these extremist group seek to attack the Federation from within. These groups are under the foolish pretense that they can 'hold their own' against the Arachnids who fail to discriminate between believer and gentile. While the Federation has insisted on exercising caution when travelling beyond its borders, the Mormons have consistently ignored any and all warnings in the pursuit of wanton liberty, the same "liberty" that governments of the Disorders were obsessed with proliferating at the expense of public safety and integrity. While the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints has cooperated with the Federation, the schism between the Church and extremist groups has grown more and more straining as the years drag on. Now more than ever, the human race needs to stand unified against the Arachnid threat. It should be noted that many prominent figures in the Federation's history have been men and women of all backgrounds, including those of the Mormon faith. However, while other religious organizations with stipulations about certain aspects of the Federation's usage of the Mobile Infantry and Fleet to guarantee a means of citizenship, the Mormons do not hold such grievances with the Federation.
