What is a Psychic?

A Psychic is defined as an entity that is capable of utilizing the talents and abilities of a Mental or Emotional nature that can affect one or more individuals including themselves. Examples include, but are not limited to;

  1. Being able to get a “gut feeling” that something is about to happen.
  2. Read someone’s mind to some degree.
  3. Being able to detect something’s association with something that has happened (Such as being able to obtain a hazy idea of what happened with a blood-stained knife).[1]
  4. Eavesdrop on Psychic communication between individuals.[2]
  5. Render themselves and nearby individuals more difficult to detect Psychically.

Arachnids possess Psychics in the form of their Brain Bug caste and similarly “High ranked” bugs. They utilize this prowess to control and dictate the flow of the swarm. As of yet, no-one has managed to successfully tap into anything except the basic emotions of an Arachnid.

Skinnies are another race that posses Psychics, though the extent of how and where Psychics fall within Skinny society is incredibly difficult to pin down. However, when the Federation has encountered Psychic Skinnies they have almost always been Chieftains.

Progenitors also hold a place on the list of Psychics, although, it is a little different than the other major factions. Progenitor Sirens are psychic statues that act as localized command centers for nearby progenitors. In absence of the Arc, these small scale command centers are the only sort of structure groups of progenitors may have. Thrall have, through study, an increased receptibility to these psychic entities, making them far easier to control on the Siren's end. As for a human psychic controlling them, that is considered suicide.

How are Psychics found?

During the early years of a child existing, the infant can be subjected to genetic and behavioral testing. Publicly, this is under the guise of trying to make sure that the individual is offered the correct support that they may need in life as well as supplying that assistance to their parents. Unofficially, it is done to check for children who exhibit signs of being Psychic. To help ensure the information is correct the testing is re-done every year with a mandatory attendance every fourth year. This continues until either the Federation is sure of whether the child is Psychic or not.

The process isn’t perfect as some individuals can slip through due to administrative errors, faulty equipment, medical staff making errors or in some cases it can be due to deception. If the individual is later found to be Psychic when they enlist or are found out to be Psychic by the Federation then they are retroactively given the education they need to understand and correctly use their abilities.

What is the Federation’s view on Psychics?

The Federation firmly believes that, even with all of the problems that come with handling them, Psychics are beneficial in at least some capacity. Maybe that person can help track down and find a criminal or terrorist hiding within a Federation world? Perhaps they can provide “Camouflage” for small groups of Infantry as they traverse a Separatist world? The tactical, legal, and research applications for Psychics are immeasurable.

However, the Federation also recognizes that Psychics are a limited commodity that cannot be replaced with ease nor replicated as of yet. Thus, they are the only group of people that the Federation will willingly go out and recruit in stark contrast to how the rest of the Mobile Infantry, Fleet and Military Intelligence obtain their fresh new faces.

The Psychic population is also heavily restricted in what they can and cannot do, lest they run rogue and cause immense problems for all aspects of Federal life. Such restrictions include the inability for any Psychic to hold an elected position of Public Office nor can they take any role within a Governmental body that gives them legislative or executive authority within the Federation. This restriction mainly exists due to an incredibly negative backlash to the reveal that Psychic people existed and was established to assure the population that they will not take control of their lives.

Another restriction is that Psychics are banned from gambling as well as directly investing in the Stock Market on any system. If an individual with Psychic capabilities wants to purchase any stock it must be through an Investment firm.

What is the Public Perception of Psychics?

Generally speaking, people treat Psychics with a mix of resentment and distrust as information about Psychics is scarce be it due to the Federation being tight-lipped on the entire situation or just a case of information genuinely not existing. Because of this, people often choose to believe Psychics aren’t actually real, or if they are that they will never meet one, thus when the individual does meet a Psychic by way of having to look at their identification card for any purpose the Civilian or Citizen in question would start acting severely different than before. They may become quite reserved or abrasive, possibly even immediately move away from the Psychic in question.

In terms of Mobile Infantry personnel, they could find Psychics unsettling or outright untrustworthy due to the potential that the individual is reading their mind, or maybe receives preferential treatment in their eyes because of being special. Indeed, they may even be jealous that they themselves do not have any special talents of the Psychic variety.

Despite their use by the Mobile Infantry and Fleet, the stigma still remains against the odd nature of psychic individuals. Those who live to become discharged often face difficulties in relating with other non-psychics in general. Starting a family, and transitioning back to civilian life a citizen, prove to be challenging for many psychics across the galaxy. As a result of waging mental warfare for years, sometimes decades against much more psychically powerful foes, the individual is usually plagued with repercussions, be they visual or auditory hallucinations, to vivid flashbacks. The heavy pension post-discharge is partly due to the fact that many psychics struggle to hold regular jobs once they rotate out. Old misconceptions, and superstitions about psychics still persist in many parts of the galaxy, and many find themselves alienated in their former communities.

So you think you’re Psychic? Maybe you are...

This section is dedicated to those who were given Psychic status before the inception and creation of this document. It serves as a guide for how your character might react and what they may experience as a direct result of being “Discovered” whilst they were in Service.

You may first experience disorientation, confusion, headaches (Even to the degree of being migraines) as your mind adapts to the potential now manifesting within you. This is normal and not something you should be too distraught over.

You may also notice that things begin to feel off, that you may become more hesitant to perform actions that are dangerous because you just can’t shake the feeling that something is going to happen. You may also begin to have a vivid recurring dream of past events or you could keep remembering this one place very well and you can’t stop thinking about it. You may even find that you get the feeling that there’s someone nearby, sometimes more than just a someone.

As you try to adjust to these sensations you may note that people begin to act “odd”, that they start treating you differently. This is normal.

If you begin experiencing these sensations, you may notice that certain individuals start appearing more frequently out of the corner of your eye. You may even experience nightmares where you wake up inside an unfamiliar place. This is normal.

The Life of a Psychic

Federal researchers have not yet discovered the precise factors that determine whether or not a person will become a psychic. Psychics are sourced throughout the galaxy, being discovered whenever symptoms tend to manifest, be it childhood or adulthood. Upon detection, the psychic individual is placed through rigorous testing. After determining their psychic aptitude, the individual is enrolled in a program designed to fashion their psychic ability into a controllable weapon that can be utilized at will.

Not all psychics share the same level of control over their abilities. Some end up being enrolled into a psychic program because they seek out medical help for the 'voices' and 'premonitions' they witness, believing themselves to be ill. Others already know of their gift, and actively seek out the Mobile Infantry for further direction. Upon being officially interred with a MIPOD detachment, the individual is an incredibly valuable asset on the field. Often targeted for capture by both Arachnids, Skinnies, and separatists, the knowledge and skills that they possess cannot afford to fall into enemy hands. MIPOD operatives are instructed to commit suicide to deny the enemy information, be they a brain bug, or a Skinny Cheiftain. Arachnids and Skinnies possess much more control over their psychic abilities than human beings; there is little even the most seasoned psychic can do to resist against the probing mind of a brain bug, or a Skinny Chieftain.

Great efforts are made to hide the presence of psychics on the field, their only distinguishing feature being their purple berets that they wear off duty, and even this, is entirely optional. Some psychics do chose to stay under the radar in order to be seen the same by their comrades in arms.

The psychic individual will gradually exert more control over their power as they become more experienced, but it doesn't come without considerable risk to the individual. The rigors of psychic use on the brain are taxing; many face adverse health issues such as strokes, seizures, burst blood vessels, anemia, headaches, insomnia, and fatigue. These adverse health issues gradually become more manageable for more veteran psychics who have felt out their abilities, and have a gauge on what they're capable of. In some cases, overexertion can cause one's ability to 'burn out', either temporarily, or sometimes permanently. At that point, they are typically discarded if they are still mentally fit, and usually discharged with citizenship and a fat pension. Sometimes, those who cannot be rehabilitated after a 'burn out' and are conscious of crucial secrets, disappear. The Federation places a great investment in a psychic; if they no longer become a use to the Mobile Infantry or Fleet, and they are quickly discarded to avoid them and the information they possess from falling into enemy hands.

For the previously listed reasons, Psychics tend to be aware of their status as a tool for the Federation, and don't tend to stick their nose where it doesn't belong on account of what may lie in store in the future. Psychics are regularly in contact with medical personnel who prescribe medicines, perform therapy, and general rehabilitation to MIPOD operatives. Treatments for seizures, post traumatic stress disorder, migraines, nightmares, and many other of the ailments that afflict psychics are tended to by these individuals. Occasionally, hypnotic suggestion is utilized to help a MIPOD operative keep a 'cooler' composure, or to exert a greature measure of control over their abilities in stressful situations, or how to subconsciously suggest defenses for psychic attacks.

Psychic Abilities Basic Info

When a Psychic performs an ability which can fail, or has a varying result, they must roll.

Examples include;
Someone tries to read someone else’s mind and they’re resisting.
Someone touches an object or person and tries to see it’s history.
Someone tries to get an early warning when something is going to happen.
Someone tries to analyse the area (Think Shaun from the TV show Psych).

Someone tries to use psychic suggestion to induce a state of mind on a subject.

The following is a guideline on what you can do with the result. If you would rather use a straight 50/50 then you may, or some other result system, you are welcome to do so, this is merely a suggestion.

If the result is 1-10, the Psychic has over-exerted him / herself and cannot conduct any further psychic activities that mission in addition to being dazed and concussed.

If the result is 11-40 you can give them bad, inaccurate or outright wrong information.

If the result is 41-70 you can give them a vague or useful bit of information. It must be accurate to some degree and can be misinterpreted by the psychic.

If the result is 71-100 you can give them precise information. This information can be precise to a point where it can cause a problem (E.G, they see who stabbed who but absolutely nothing about whether it was self defence or not.)

If there is no chance to fail, or the result is binary (they do or don’t), then you as the event runner can dictate the result as you see fit.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Three 'Tiers' of Psychic Abilities are divided in this fashion.

Tier 1 Psychics are fresh psychics. They have all the universal abilities (Danger Detection, Short-range Lifesign Detection), as well as minor class abilities. For Telepaths, this is Telepathic Communication. Memory Men; Memory Retrieval, Sensors; Area Analysis.

Tier II Psychics are psychics who have achieved a certain proficiency with their universal abilities, as well as their classifications abilities. This is usually considered to be the point an operative should be at when they are a Specialist.

Tier III Psychics are Operatives who've proven to have such a solid understanding of their abilities, that they are considered for the Handler program. SSpc. is the beginning of this 'teaching' responsibility that is given to these operatives.

Tier IV Psychics are those who have proven themselves as capable trainers, and are usually those who hold TSgt. or Lt. within MIPOD.

Tier V Psychics are those who have achieved a certain level of psychic proficiency that they are considered to be placed in larger scale leadership positions. This designation usually houses Majors and above.

NOTES:

  • Much like an NCO, a Psychic is used to enhance the overall RP experience of the server, thus making the server feel more alive and unique. As such, you must understand that your character may simply be used in manners that you could deem 'unfair.' For example, your character may suddenly drop and have a seizure to express just how powerful something is, or perhaps to show how large an attacking Arachnid force is when they had attempted to estimate its size through a Psychic ability, which ultimately backfired.

  • This 'faction' is to be regulated with a very strict set of rules as to prevent the Psychics from 'doing everything.' If it is ever discovered that you are abusing your position, doing things that you're not supposed to be doing, and so forth, you will be dealt with immediately, perhaps seeing your character drop dead to a blood clot. As such, rules will be relayed to you, should you be accepted?

  • This 'faction' is to be kept at an incredibly low-population -- As such, do not take it to heart whenever you are not admitted.

  • Characters who are not new and have 'discovered' their Psychic-abilities will be much weaker than fresh transfer -- They will not be able to grow as fast, learn as quickly and become as powerful as a fresh-transfer. This needs to be made incredibly clear.

  • All applicants must be accepted by myself and run by my XO, as this faction is incredibly controlled and regulated, as mentioned before. As such, you must have a high-community standing, be regarded as a good RPer, and must be somewhat knowledgeable regarding the lore behind SST.

  • If you are applying with a character who is already on the server, you will be denied. No old characters are accepted into the division.
