"Soldiers ain't machines, but they're better than civilians. That's fact, indisputable and foremost. But you should never have to say it out loud."

- Staff Sergeant Lawson

Creed

Spoiler

You cannot know true joy without knowing true sadness.

You cannot know the light without seeing the darkness.

You cannot save a life without knowing how it is taken.

Life and death are two sides of the same coin flipped by the whim of God.

Perhaps we may one day achieve true happiness without sadness.

Perhaps.

But like how death gives life meaning, sadness gives happiness meaning.

Our heroes are not heroes because they are Gods that are immune to despair or suffering.

Our heroes are heroes because they are humans who know despair or suffering.

While their names will be lost to the footnotes of history, their deeds remain carved in our records as testimony to their sacrifice.

So call out for a hero when you are plunged into despair.

The person who will save you is not enshrouded in light. The person who will take your hand is the one who knows their way through the darkness.

Backstory:

Lawson comes from a military family, expectations were for him to attend the Fleet Academy in the name of prestige and respectability, but Lawson enlisted with the Mobile Infantry simply to spite his indifferent father, as time would show this was the ideal decision as he flourished in the mud-slogger and common soldiery mentalities to a point where he was noted by his instructors as being ready for assignment half-way through his basic training. When the time came to leave basic Lawson proved a valuable member of any squad he was posted into but tragedy would strike when the ship he was posted on was shot down by plasma bugs in a surprise attack from the Hlrathu Moon Juji, an emergency deployment followed and the Infantry detachment alongside surviving fleet members would wage a guerrilla front against the Hives of Juji for three months before being rediscovered by the Federation. Lawson's leadership and ability was made note of and to celebrate the finding of this lost battalion an awards ceremony took place and Lawson was awarded the Mobile Infantry Cross.

In the aftermath of promotion Lawson undertook the exams for the Engineering detachment and passed, he would serve within them for years following this until he was promoted to Tech Sergeant and his candidacy for OCS made clear. However he was fixed in his soldier's mindset that was incompatible with that of an officer and so was failed from the course not even reaching Third Lieutenant. Returning to the UCF Nelson but asking for a Sergeant's role his request was granted and across several theatres he served as a Sergeant, such was his ability he was administratively promoted to Staff Sergeant on several occasions to guide new Sergeants in their role, eventually however even this left a bitter taste and when candidacy for the Marauders was opened to him, he did not refuse the offer even at the cost of rank.

Personal Relationships

Friendly | Liked | Good Gut Feeling | Acquainted | Uncertain | Disliked | Hated

- Francis Ramsey -

He's one funny Southern US black man, every story includes a buddy whose first name begins with 'K' and some whacky antics that usually result in some kind of fire. He's a solid personality in the unit and while not a spotlight filler he fills in a support role nicely

- Cait Donovan -

Christ but how she reminds me of Izzy, she's a free spirit in a world and circumstance where such things shouldn't be possible, to that end a lot of people gravitate toward her because she makes them feel at ease

...

I fought with her a few times when we're on the Grant and she honestly seems to know what she's doing, got a bit of a hot mic attitude but she backs it up with competency so I find it a decent trade off. Hope she doesn't say something she regrets with us returning to protocol

- Tumas Tankijin -

Shit in our first meeting he struck me as such a leering piece of pond-scum. But over time I have to admit the guys general attitude has rubbed off on me. I tease him but I'll be damned if he doesn't normally have something in reserve to throw back at me. Not sure if he has the strength of character for Corporal but if he asks me, I'll lend him some advice. 'least then I'll know he's smart enough to ask his seniors when he's stuck.

- Chloe Harris -

I couldn't think of an individual less suited to this life we lead than Harris, she's too cheerful, light-hearted and jovial. At least that's skin deep, below the surface there is a tale a lot darker than many could predict by looking at her. I can't tell if she's simply unaware of what makes for good morals or is so irreproachably joyful that she just glazes over things as a defence mechanism.

- Carson Sawyer -

She's a bubbly little thing who like Cait reminds me a lot of Izzy, both are loudmouthed and crass, lewd and lacking in filter but this one is in an officer's wrapper as Wing Commander. Haven't seen her fly but looking around at the other TAC squadron members and seeing her as their commander I'd wager she's good in the cockpit.

- Roderick Oakwood -

Why on Earth this guy is still soldierin' with one eye missing is astonishing to me, furthermore I can see leadership in him, I'd tell him if I first met him to take a backseat and let those with depth perception to the tricky stuff, either he's practised or has good instincts but he'll surprise you with his competency. Surprised me

...

But he has a wordiness to him, rank doesn't give you a right to lecture those with more experience than you; boy.

- Roki Bosenac -

Did you know he's Serbian? No? Don't worry he'll let you know. I like him, he's got a certain calculating edge to him; it might be because he always wears that fuckin' flight helmet of his he presents himself as a bit of an enigma and doesn't talk like a socialite so you always listen when he speaks. Unless it's about the history of the Slavic states, you can switch off after the first time.

Farewell to the Halcyon days

- Omar Saastamoinen -

Omar was a solid personality and soldier both, had the benefit of years to temper his resolve and spirit. I'll sorely miss this son of a bitch.

- Jane Evans -

I liked Evans, I'd call her the ideal Staff Sergeant in the brief time she spent at the post. A combination of soothing, authoritative and funny to boot. I'm not sure where she is or where she'll wind up but her influence will be missed.

- Solomon Murphy -

I never really liked Murphy, not even as a person, it's an odd mentality for anyone to think of someone they barely know but he always struck me as a man of instinctual abandon and crass inability to hold his own opinions, modelling himself on one person or another and never finding a formula that fitted. He's gone now, won't miss him.
