Backstory: Niko grew up in New Zealand, in a Maori community in Auckland. Growing up was relatively easy for him, his mother was a wealthy merchant and his father was a moderately famous professional fighter. At age 18, Niko joined the Mobile Infantry and stayed in service until late 2298. The Tamati family had to evacuate and move to Scarvis, so he decided to leave the Infantry to help his parents gain stability. He mostly did professional fighting. Once his parents could support themselves he decided to go out and try mercenary work. So he joined up with the next group he saw, that would be when he climbed aboard the Zion.

Rodrick Oakwood: This brah can take a punch! The fight was a close call though, seems like the man doesn't tap out when he needs to, I coulda broken 'is arm. I'd like to see him out in the field sometime ye. I like this guy.
